When we decided to move to Estoril, we knew we were stepping into one of Portugal’s most beautiful coastal regions, but we had no idea just how special this place would feel. Known as the "Riviera of Portugal," Estoril and neighboring Cascais have given us a lifestyle that’s relaxed, scenic, and a welcome contrast to the fast-paced life we once knew.
A Climate That Keeps You Outdoors
The climate in Estoril is one of its greatest draws. The shoulder seasons offer comfortable weather, perfect for morning walks, afternoons on the terrace, and exploring the coastline without the summer crowds. The summer itself is nothing short of spectacular — sun-filled days spent on golden beaches, wandering through open markets, and enjoying lazy evenings on vibrant patios.
Winter, on the other hand, can be unpredictable. Some weeks feel mild and comfortable, while others bring grey skies, wind, and rain that test your patience. But even on the wettest days, there’s something refreshing about watching the waves crash along the seawall or cozying up in a café with a warm drink and a good book. The rhythm of the seasons gives life here a certain balance — a mix of outdoor adventure and peaceful downtime.

Our Daily Life in Estoril
Our life in Estoril revolves around simple pleasures. One of our favorite rituals is walking along the seawall with our dog, Scarlett. The path stretches from Estoril to Cascais, winding along the coastline with endless views of the Atlantic. The sound of the waves, the salty air, and Scarlett’s endless curiosity make these walks a highlight of our day.
Another big part of our routine is driving Carson back and forth to his football training. His journey with Estoril Praia’s Elite Academy keeps us on the move, but it’s a privilege to see him thriving in such a competitive environment. The drives have also become a valuable time for conversation — a chance to catch up, reflect, and connect as he chases his dream.
When we’re not walking Scarlett or ferrying Carson to training, we spend time exploring the charming neighborhoods around us. Estoril is quieter and more residential, while Cascais feels vibrant and social. The cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and relaxed cafes create an inviting atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and appreciate the moment.
Easy Access to Adventure
One of the greatest perks of living in Estoril is its proximity to incredible destinations. Sintra, with its fairytale palaces, lush forests, and rich history, is just a short 20-minute drive away. It’s perfect for spontaneous day trips or hiking excursions.
For those craving city life, Lisbon is only 40 minutes away by train. This easy access makes it simple to enjoy the vibrant energy of the capital — whether that’s exploring trendy neighborhoods, discovering new restaurants, or soaking in the rich cultural scene. Being able to dip into the buzz of Lisbon and return to the calm of Estoril offers the best of both worlds.
Embracing a Slower Pace of Life
One of the biggest adjustments has been adapting to the slower pace of life. Coming from Vancouver, where everything felt fast and efficient, Estoril feels calm and unhurried. Shops close in the afternoon for siesta, dinners stretch long into the evening, and weekends are all about leisurely walks, socializing, and soaking in the sun.
At first, this slower pace felt unfamiliar — even frustrating at times — but now we’ve come to appreciate it. It’s given us more time to focus on what matters most: connecting as a family, enjoying meaningful conversations, and appreciating the little things we used to rush past.

Looking Ahead to Summer
While every season has its charm, we can already tell that summer in Estoril will be something special. The beaches come alive with locals and tourists alike, while the lively open markets fill the streets with color and energy. Restaurants spill out onto patios, and the long daylight hours make it easy to embrace a carefree lifestyle.
We’re looking forward to lazy afternoons at Praia do Tamariz, sampling fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants, and spending warm evenings strolling through Cascais’ bustling town center. The combination of beach life, outdoor dining, and endless sunshine promises to make summer an unforgettable season.
Finding Home in Estoril
Estoril may not have been the most obvious choice when we first envisioned moving to Europe, but it’s proven to be the perfect fit for our family. The coastal charm, relaxed lifestyle, and sense of community have helped us feel grounded in this new chapter of life. While our hearts are still tied to Vancouver, Estoril has become a place we’re proud to call home — a place where we’ve learned to slow down, savor the moment, and embrace life’s simple pleasures.
